Ok I see it is in Chambers meaning a toast but the one I looked at only had goodbye as the meaning.

Evening all, late to the party again, had a right old 'do' with this one, a bit of help from forum and some lateral thinking, almost done but stuck with NW corner, 1,2,3 down baffling me so a gentle nudge would be appreciated....... Love the 6 and 8 d clues though

1D: 4 letter word for fight containing 3 letter french word for "that", although it's not the first one google translate suggests. Nose as in a character of wine I believe.

2D: Gathering + way to enlightenment. Sometimes dirty

3D: OR is soldiers (organised regiment I think), rest should be straightforward.

OR = Other Ranks

There’s a great resource for crossword abbreviations that I’ve always found useful here…

I thought 1d was a poor clue. Some really awkward French required.

Not that I know any French, but I agree, especially since they had an obvious Spanish alternative (which could continue a Fawlty Towers theme).

It was pretty obvious what the answer was when I saw the 2 unusual vowels though.

Yes. I said earlier that my recollection of O level French and Google translate came up with two different words for"that" than the one required. Surely Spanish or Italian might have been better?
