I can’t quite get 6 (radial) to work. I have an entrance in Scotland, so I guess I’m not sure where the half-finished comes in.

Never mind. I had the wrong entrance.

Hi MPRS - I think I also had a wrong entrance: "ingoes" for which the clue should have been plural "entrances"; but then I found another Scots word for entrance in Chambers - singular- is "ingate" which must be what our setter had in mind. Either way, it's the "ing" that you're after, whichever 3 letters may have folllowed it.

Tatters and Wintonian, thanks for your help. Re Loge's earlier explanation: I know but I somehow had too many As!!

Hi dsc,

Were you trying to get an a from “across”? I did the same first time round, but to my surprise Chambers doesn’t give “a” (or “ac”) as an abbreviation for “across”. Similarly, Chambers gives neither “d” nor “dn” as abbreviations for “down”.

The radial clue 2 seems to have posed quite a challenge (it was my last clue to be solved). I wonder if it would have been more straightforward if “automobile” had been used instead of “motorcar” to hint at the US connection?

Well done, Wintonian, you're spot on with your guesses.
I like your "auto" idea. 2 seems to have been a tricky one for a few of us and as it ended up it was my last, too...

2 was one of the last I got and it is indeed tricky. I'm not keen on the "X Y goes outside" construction, especially when there are added obstacles like extra letters and a non-standard method of entry. I'd prefer "which", "that" or at least a comma between the X and Y.

,Of course, my suggestion of “automobile” rather than “motorcar” in radial clue 2 wouldn’t work because it would have to be preceded by “an” rather than “a”.

The Ace of Hearts seems to specialise in circular puzzles. Regulars may remember the puzzle “Disco Lovers” just over a year ago, based on Maeve Binchy’s novel “Circle of Friends”, which had a very similar technical structure to this week’s puzzle.

Malone, it may be helpful to change the name of this thread to " Listener xxxx, will contain hints but NOT answers"
