Hello forum friends. I'm left with 17ac Household devices... which seems like it should be an anagram of Cold salmon but I can't force it into my pattern of A?L ?O? C?N ?
Where have I gone wrong?

You have everything correct. It’s a rather outdated expression, the last two words are abbreviations

Thanks. I've got it now. Don't think I've ever heard or read it. Kind of Newspeak.

It was the title of an excellent (IMO) album by The Jam, which might date the currency of the expression.

Nice one Geeker, although my favs. were In The City and Setting Sons:-)

I saw The Jam at Poplar Civic Hall in 1977 - it cost £0.50p to get in and I guess I must have told the story once too often as one time I'd just started to tell it and my brother overheard and interrupted .... "Bren, please! I'll give you £50.00 never tell that story again":-)

Brendan,
Well, it's a story that evokes a certain amount of envy and is worth retelling! :-)
