5d is based on middle letters (essentially), meaning one

5d: take the essential or middle two letters of the second and third words.

My younger son is home for the weekend so old habits were restored as we sat down to do it together. We blended well - I did the easy ones and he did the hard ones! Grateful for the forum's parsing of 7d and laughed out loud at Jono's comment on 18D.COD 10D

And welcome to newcomers. Don't assume everyone who finishes has the correct entries! I often return at the end of the day (yes, even Wednesday) to discover correct solutions. It's a great forum, especially for GK answers that pass me by (often ancient poets!).

I've read the book, and thought it terribly over-rated - it seemed to me that he was so impressed by the structure he had created that he forgot to write an engaging story. I did like the parts with the waitress, though.
