Like others I have a filled grid, but the veiled hints provided for the end game are too veiled for this old codger I infer that "noted" is to be interpreted in a subtle way, and that as both reveals from the special letters are delivered in a non-spoken way that seems to be where Ifor is pointing me. But that's where the brick wall appears. If a gentle loosing of a brick or two were possible ... ?

Cockie, I hope this helps without giving too much away:

The seven letters that represent (normally combined with five lines) the non-spoken way of reciting the piece whose title is given by the moving letters in the Across clues, can be followed across the grid in two passes. The non-spoken piece has 24 such representative letters, and the position of each letter corresponds to its pitch.

Thanks drxx, my hunch that the theme could be 'annotated'in 2-letter terms wasn't too far off but all clear now.

They won't be in a straight line. You're looking at letter 5 of 31 down, letter 3 of 38 across, letter 4 of 33 down and letter 4 of 50 across.

Can anyone help with the parsing of 25a - Won by holding highest note

If I have the words that the extra letters spell correct then an N needs to be dropped from either "won" or "note". The problem is I have BELA? which looks like it must be "belay" but how does that match a definition of "wo" or "ote"?

I must have wrong somewhere but I can't see where?
