It will not surprise you to learn that I had the wrong answer to this clue. Oh well...

Thanks Malone (again) for your earlier hint on completion. As a chippy pupil at an old fashioned school I hated Latin but at least the OED gave me the answer.

However....
I presume this reveals the first line of the work and does not leave real words when the substitutions are made. Given this I would have welcomed a clearer preamble.

Williamseal, thanks - glad my earlier hint was useful. I think if the preamble had been clearer about the final non-words, it might have made working out what was to be done slightly too obvious. I don't think you're being unfair, just perhaps a little optimistic!
