...nearly there...if anyone has finished?
Is the final work to be identified in the grid in Latin or English?

Hi xwordfan, in some online sites the "title" of the work is given as the first 3 words rather than the number (which would tie in with the puzzle title)?

ive just realised now ..i don't need the title ...ive got it now...was expecting real words at the finish....

Okay, I've been trying to figure out this last problem for the best part of an hour now and I think I'm starting to hallucinate!

44d - I assume the first letter comes from "Tanzania's first" and the last letter from "start to obtain" - that means I need an A from "to" with an added "W" - so presumably "two" - I've read and re-read both "A" and "two" and even "tow" in Chambers for umpteenth time and am just not seeing it.

I assume I've gone wrong somewhere - but where?

Tanzania's first tWo = TA, then the O from Obtain

Wow! I was relying so much on Chambers when all I really needed was a simple grasp of English - Janet and John Yellow book would have sufficed!!

I was putting too much emphasis on that solver's mantra - "lift and separate".

I am afraid I am not seeing the endgame at all despite staring at the grid and cross-referencing everything to the work until I am blue in the face. I can see the first two letters - one below the other -of the first word of the work but nothing is jumping out at me. The first three words have a total of eight letters but 14 need changing. A (not so) gentle push in the right direction would be appreciated. A bird watching walk to the top of the local hill might clear my head. I will take the grid with me and sit in the sun to see if I get any inspiration.

Is the work no xxxv ?
