No problem Brendan. This is another one of those crosswords where I've completed the end game - drawn the curves and lines, got the phrase - and now working backwards to find the things that wouldn't be needed to submit it!

I'm struggling to tie up the loose ends with the last couple of clues.

1d - It looks like the extra letter should be W but isn't "That" more like 'something' than "What" - or have I got it wrong?

8d - Apart from the definition "by accident" I cannot parse a single letter of my answer but I'm pretty sure it's a group of extra letters.

15d - It looks like N is the extra letter but I've got TH in a 4 letter 'small lake' but then an ED at the end? Unless it's "got into small lake" and so that could account for the ED but then that would remove the inclusion indicator - and then I've got NTH for "peg" ?

I'm going round in circles - help!!!

8d - Just figured it out, assuming "castle" a single letter chess notation.

Hi brendan,

1d is what.
8d. Array _+coin =bit +R
15d. Peg is a 5 letter word begins with T. In 4 letter word for lake begins with P.

Brendan, 15d - the peg has 5 letters and the small lake is such as you would find in a back garden - n
8d I have similar problems but settled on what I think you have but can't relate the other 3 letters to cousin.
1d I settled for what as it fits with Chambers.

Thank you so much Sunray :-)

I was trying to make "peg" = degree = 'nth' - It's amazing how one can convince oneself that the most tortuous and unlikely parsing might be correct 😜
