...and I can't fully parse 11a) and 2d) If 2d) is a simple &Lit then my 11a) is fully checked and suits the definition but don't see the wordplay.

11a), "A" is used as the abbreviation for a metric measure.

This was my LOI, it's

It's a 5 letter word meaning 'A stretch or "extent" of space and time' and is also a homophone (sort of) of a "caterpillar" as in the industrial earthmover you see on building sites.

Your letters are correct but the 'I' from 13a is an extra letter and goes between the R and A, so it's ?RIAC?

One thing that still puzzles me is some of the missing words in the preamble, specifically the three letter word between .....

.... ANSWERS ARE ??? SHORT AND SO .....

Good Mornng, Brendan. My scrap paper for this is in the bin, but it was "too short" and something like fill the gaps with some of the omitted letters leaving real words and headword in Chambers was in there somewhere. Don't want to fry my brain by going back to fully retranslate the preamble!!
