I ag—- w—h buddy. At least up to this single point. Finished all but one cell. For 12a I have S?LA. Headscratching produces only splinters. Help appreciated (and Happy Easter, btw).

Jack, I'd say your S was wrong. The 'John' in 6 D is a slightly less common version, but seen before in crosswords.
