Hi quisling, my route is almost the same as your with a jink to the right then south from the "t" (there's a bar at the top of 29d).

Having re-parsed some of the clues, I realised that I had one of the guardians in the wrong place. So I've moved it to where I now think it should be (20ac./6dn.) - this means that the route I mentioned earlier is indeed the shortest ('unmonitored') way out!

Many many thanks ginge. I'd parsed it so the second one was a guardian. I think the clue was a little ambiguous, but your parsing has to be the correct one. Thanks for putting me out of my misery. Lovely puzzle!

Can someone explain why the A in "not A number" is the A sin stoA and not the A in enchAins - wouldn't the shortest route mean using the latter?

Brendan, the discussion on Fifteen Squared suggests that the escape route can't cross bars in the grid. http://www.fifteensquared.net/2021/04/06/inquisitor-1692-clue-two-v-by-external/ I'm not sure it's fair that we have to assume this without any indication being given.

I went for the same same route as presumably you did, but as I don't send these things I wasn't too worried about this detail.

Ah! I see. Like you I don't send them in but, if I did, I'd be pretty miffed if my entry was ruled out for crossing a bar when there was no indication that we weren't to do so.
