2a - Ignore my parsing, Quisling's definition for courses/beats is surely the right one - sorry about that:-)

It turned out that when I started filling in the “8”s, I figured that it had to be bets. I appreciate the parsing help from both of you though.

It really isn't clear from the preamble whether submissions should include only the eight 8s, or every letter of the answers. \how has anyone else interpreted this?

Never occurred to me that it would be anything other than the complete set of answers, Luftmensch. Interesting question.

I’ve been tackling the Listener for a little over half a year now and this is the first time I’ve seen an example to complement the instructions. I wish this was done more often as sometimes the instructions are more cryptic than the crossword. Anyhow, an enjoyable solve and nice to have an endgame on my cultural level for once!

I see no reason at all not to include in grid the letters in across and down clues that do not feature in the 8s. It seems perverse not to submit a full grid unless so instructed, Luftmensch, and I think you are overthinking it.

My first post, tho I've been lurking for a while, appreciating many hints along the way. I have a completed grid, have identified the partnership, and have one clash, but I can't for the life of me, after hours of grid staring, identify the 18 cells. I'm feeling very stupid because this clearly hasn't stumped anyone else. I would very much appreciate a hint.
