29d 4 letter word for sound content ( a cat might) change the first letter

I believe it’s the penultimate letter of 24d, merenz

Thanks Kirky. I’d assumed this was the wordplay, together with the preceding bishop... but I just can’t fathom how ‘removed black’ is the definition, despite my journey through Chambers. I’ll be kicking myself I’m sure but, alas, I don’t appear to be benefiting from the ‘as soon as I post’ revelation.

Thank you Quisling... I’d got my last letter from that clue (changing the second letter of the last word). Right... I have some unpicking to do. And my apologies to Malone.

Black is a misprint (fourth letter), Merenz. One of the last definitions of the answer in Chambers should set you straight.

That clue did allow an n, a or t. Rather sneaky. The 11th definition of 29d in the BRB equates to the corrected definition, I think
