While looking for the possible destination I was diverted, not by birds, but by an article in Vanity Fair called Anatomy of a Miracle. It is lengthy but enlightening and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the background, other similar stories and aeroplanes.

A very enjoyable puzzle but one that I haven't quite put to bed yet. I think I have the answer to 11 across but I don't get how 'natural killer' signifies the first two letters (which I'm assuming it does). I'm also struggling with 8 down, because I'm convinced all my other answers are correct and yet the word I have there doesn't seem to exist. Help needed...

Chambers gives NK as an abbreviation.

For 8, chambers gives the last 4 letters as "To fasten (a cable, etc) round the bitts", so 8d (also in Chambers) makes sense as "to remove...."

Thanks Buddy! I was thinking 8 across began with an 's' rather than a 'k' - and I somehow filled in 19A wrong. I put an e' instead of an 'i' for the second letter.

Aslac, your letters are correct. There's a fairly ordinary, common word that fits the blanks - and fits in with 43 and 23....
