Good question!

I guess the "some answers" in the preamble allows for that but looks like an oversight to me. Why not just have a clue with 'Troy' as the solution?
This was tough for sure, I had no way of guessing the originator until I had eleven of the twelve letters and even then I had to try a few different pseudo-names before I stumbled on the right one. The misprint in 28 didn't help of course but I dismissed it as such fairly quickly.

Still struggling with the second modification here. I have worked out what must happen to eg 2d and have 10 of the 12 misprints but they don't look like any name I recognise! Hints for 7a and 8d might help find a missing misprint, possibly...

I agree Muraria, that 5 down is an oversight, as it contradicts the fourth word of the quotation. Like you, I fiddled around with potential names (not helped by the "extra" misprint) before I hit on the originator. It's almost impossible to know what's going on until you have the quotation, and that combined with a hard-to-guess name makes this especially tough. I enjoyed it, though.

7 across: rash person is a 7-letter word (think Tottenham!) minus the first three letters, which mean "named" in Spenserian (2nd def in Chambers) Misprint is in the first word.

8 down is a thematic entry, with an answer of 7 letters. Word for fuss + B to give a description of parsley, sage etc.

Thanks Loge I think that should get me going again. So 7a is thematic AND has a misprint. I'd been assuming clues were one or the other or just normal.

7a isn't thematic

Ah sorry, I misread your hint. 7a is just a misprint, not thematic.

Yes, just a misprint. Apologies for lack of clarity.

If it's any encouragement, I managed to work out what was going on and complete the grid without knowing the quotation and its originator.

Finding both of these, for me, was harder than filling the grid. I also found it a little odd that there was no requirement to "show your workings" by entering the originator's name under the grid as is so often the case.

So in theory this puzzle could have been won (had there been a prize) by a submitter who hadn't fully cracked it. But a wonderful puzzle all the same.
