It's a "simple" double def leading to a 3-letter answer which has to be modified thematically.

I found this puzzle pretty tough.

One of the problems of puzzles where there are deliberate misprints in the clues is the unwanted incursion of an inadvertent misprint, as here, I believe, in 28D Otherwise a magnificent gradually-dropping-PDM exercise. Luckily reading ODQ for "originators" ending with the last 3 letters didn't take as ling as it might have done. Without that I'd still be struggling.

Agree, Cockie. Unless there is a meaning of IS that I don’t know, 28 makes no sense without a correction. Typos are very rare in these puzzles, and if this is a typo it’s in a most unfortunate place!

I now have confirmation from the highest authority that there is indeed an inadvertent misprint in 28. The first word should be “It”.

Well, this is interesting. I have a 90% complete grid, I think I have worked out one of the modifications.....and I still have no idea what's going on! It probably doesn't help that I don't have the ODQ. Am I likely to have heard of the originator?
It might help if someone could advise if 30d is something that happens when eg Oxford colleges race on the water. (Even if I'm right I can't see the parsing!).

Ah well, onwards...slowly....

Kirky, look up your answer in Chambers for 29a and also 'Jonathan'. It's a new one to me but means an American.
