Hi Jack,

42a - The actual word doesn't have it's own in Chambers, at least not in that form. Think what happens when you do something "once more" - for example, if I "take an exam" but fail and wanted to sit it "once more" I would "??take the exam" - then you're looking for a synonym of "wave" (as in 'trying to attract attention').

.....I should also have said that the answer is an anagram, but one of the the anagrist words needs a letter changed.

PS - Should have read "the actual word doesn't have it's own entry in Chambers...."

Jack, sorry my steer was maybe a little too gentle! Glad you got it resolved (or re-solved?)

Brendan, glad your coloured pens (or pencils) have been useful over the weekend.

Malone, your steer was fine and nicely judged. I was too far down a rabbit hole of my own creation, looking for complexity that just wasn’t there. I also fell for the misdirection in 2a at first, so all told this was not my finest hour! Great puzzle, though.

Thanks for that, Jack. You'd said it was your last clue, so I didn't want to give too much away too quickly. We can all lead ourselves astray at times!

I have a full grid, can see which letter to enter in lower case and know which of the two parallel thematic words to highlight. I cannot however for the life of me see the three cells to be highlighted. Also the preamble refers to a numeral in the final grid. I can see where that goes and what it is but surely it should read 'number' as it is double figure unless it is entered as a Roman numeral. Any heavy hints/pointers in the right direction would be more than welcome.

just entered it as the usual number... the 3 cells you need are in "that long diagonal" where the 1st word of your "down extras" crosses it 3 times...
