Connie - don’t think so although may misunderstand the question.

The “ears” are in the words spelled as normal. The inscription in the unclued doesn’t end with “ears”.

As the minus has been reinstated I think that the 3 ear additions should reinstate the original epsilon???

I would say not, as only 7 entries are non-standard

Connie, I'd say 'no' too - especially as your idea would involve two stages to some of the 'modifications applied to six other answers'.

Thanks. Was unsure especially after reading intro to the very useful Big Dave which mentioned possible alterations to alphabet. I did think I might be stretching it too far!

Belated thanks to Hedge-Sparrow for another stunning puzzle - we are being spoiled recently. I was held up for a while thinking that I needed one/1 at 26 down, but after solving it I googled again and bingo!!

Let's hope that this weekend's offerings from The Holy Trinity (or Three Graces if you prefer) are as mindblowingly good as last weekend's - don't see it though.

I agree with you that this was a brilliant puzzle. I too enjoyed looking up the story - very clever to get a great puzzle from it.
