41a- my answer is an anagram of a word in the clue minus "i" which seems to come from "lacking in expertise essentially" - but why, "essentially" usually means the central letter which is an (expe)R(tise)?

Engineer lacking IN gives ENGEER, plus the central R gives the anagrist.

check your anagram fodder, it's the word you have in mind minus "in" then the r from expertise.
