5 The answer to the clue is 5 letters, the rest is thematic. An old (once) word for 'attired', coming from 'driver' and 'set'.

20. Another thematic. The definition is 'hero of book', and has 5 letters, the rest is thematic.

41a- my answer is an anagram of a word in the clue minus "i" which seems to come from "lacking in expertise essentially" - but why, "essentially" usually means the central letter which is an (expe)R(tise)?

Engineer lacking IN gives ENGEER, plus the central R gives the anagrist.

Hi Bren,
check your anagram fodder, it's the word you have in mind minus "in" then the r from expertise.
