Just came here to vent. (And I’ll never comment about a too easy puzzle again.) This one seems difficult enough, but especially so for us non-Brits.

Getting the lyrics really helped move things along but my knowledge of the thematic items is limited to say the least - and I haven't even started on the "notes" and "pegs" yet!!

Couldn't agree more, Brendan. I used the lyrics (which I got from a combination of trial and error and a lucky guess) to determine the discarded letters, which enabled me to fill the grid. I don't think I could have completed it the conventional way, i.e. getting the theme from the clues.

I think I've now placed the the pegs correctly. Before I had the tune starting promising but ending like something by Stockhausen.

Satisfying endgame but the gridfill was too much for my liking. I prefer the easy ones!

What an absolutely stunning piece of work! The construction is amazing given the constraints of making the "pegs" unambiguous, but it really does work as a version of the tune. Took a while to work out all the thematics, especially the innocuous one at the 2.30/3.15 mark. 28, my last entry, made me smile!

This puzzle is just so clever in so many ways - what a stellar effort by Tnap.

Before I even start could I ask a question? Do you need to be musical to tackle this one. I can't even bark in tune so avoided the subject?
thanks

I don't think musicality is needed, I am struggling with the various different versions online but it's just a question of copying. I don't feel the need to dig out my recorder (untouched for 50+ years) and play the tune.

I've finally managed to complete the grid, and therefore clearly know the theme, but haven't got a scooby-doo as to what the pegs are. The four thematics were pretty difficult, and I haven't a clue on how to parse radial 23 (assuming I have got it correct).

radial 23:

In Chambers, one definition of the answer is the same word with INTER- affixed. If you lookup that unfamiliar word you will see that the first 4 words of the clue comprise the definition. The interior of a common 5-letter word for warning provides the first 3 letters and the last two are a well-known abbreviation
