I was fixated on Henry Irving and trying to find a definition involving collapsing in laughter. I realised that the subsidiary indication was the last three words. A deliberate red herring?

1a - 2 letters for "aged"(abbr. of a Latin word) + the the plural of the usual "US soldiers" - alteration is in the first word.

Thanks Brendan, I thought that was the answer, just couldn't get the definition, but think I have it now.
In 13a which letter of the first word do I need to change for the definition?

13a - 5th letter to create a verb.

Straightforward, but nice puzzle. And I particularly like the fact (assuming my rudimentary geography is correct) that the highlighted items are drawn in the appropriate shape/orientation.

Quite so; this feature also, I think, settles any ambiguity as to which of two options for the last letter of the westernmost item to go for.

I have two rivers (8 & 8) and the range (7) which all intertwine geographically but I am at a complete loss where to find the third river. I assume that it also intertwines somehow. Help in positioning/name will be appreciated.

My grid is now all filled in, except for 41a for which I have m_lle_. I know I need to change something to an 'o'.
There are some I can't parse, but I can live with that!
So if I can just get this last one I can attempt to start figuring out the relevant highlighting.
