Does anyone know if there is an online version of the Chambers Dictionary (free or for purchase)? Thanks!

Chambers.co.uk

You can also buy an app for your phone.

Hi bathmatters,
I've noticed that the free online version isn't as extensive as my printed copy. If they produced an app for a PC I would happily purchase it, but it's only available for a mobile.

I agree with mattrom. The online version is limited. However, the app has helped me tremendously doing the Listener puzzles.

Mattrom,
You can get a pc version for Chambers with WordWeb Pro. I have the mac iOS version. It also supports Collins and the Oxfords. The website is wordweb dot info

The apps for iOS and Android are excellent and very reasonably priced.

The free online version of 'Chambers' is derived from the Chambers 21st Century Dictionary, a far cry from the Big Red Book.

The Windows-based Chambers Dictionary and Thesaurus for CD-ROM was excellent, but is now out of date (it was based on the 9th paper edition) and hard to obtain. WordWeb Pro for Windows with the Chambers add-on offers a lot of functionality, but is relatively expensive if you don't want/need the bells and whistles.

Agree with all Spoffy says. WordWeb Pro is expensive, but handy where setters tend to lift definitions word for word from Chambers, as it has a full text search. Even when they don't, it can be useful. I remember Kea's circular Tour De Force, 4604, where the clue read "The writer becomes less contrary in boat on the Ganges". A full text search using "boat+Ganges" turned up just two words, PULWAR and PUTELI.
