If anyone has downloaded the main big Chambers dictionary from the Microsoft store can you please tell me the following. Can you use it to search and find all the words whose definitions include a particular word? So, for example, if I want to know all the words in Chambers whose definition includes the word "boat" can I easily do so?

Hi Nexus,

I can't answer your specific query but I notice the Chambers app on MS store offers a free trial so it might be worth taking advantage of that.

Hi Nexus, I've just had a look through the help section, and I can't see any way of doing that.

Hi Mattrom, hi Nexus,

I don't think the phone app has that feature either. The closest I've seen to it is in the Reverse Dictionary and the OneLook Reverse Dictionary, both of which are excellent.

As I've said before, the Chambers Dictionary phone app is truly exceptional value for money but the Chambers Thesaurus less so.

Nexus, the closest thing I have to what you are looking for is the Chambers Crossword Dictionary. Under the entry for boat it would have a list of all types of boats. (Actually you have to look under ship, but still.) I don't think there is an app version though; I have it in print.

Nexus, in WordWeb Pro you can do exactly this. It’s called a full text search and it brings back every entry where your search word or string appears. As an option you can make the search case sensitive or match whole words only

Just in case some of you don`t know - Anne Bradford`s Bradford`s Crossword Solver`s Dictionary is excellent ... it provides lists of rivers, composers etc, grouped together by the number of letters in the word.

I found out about the book on this forum - I think possibly Rosalind or Rusty mentioned it on PCT.
