Does 'honoured' work for 2d.? I suppose it could be construed as '(given an) honour'.

Apologies, ixion. I was forgetting that not every cryptic crossword is tied to the BRB... I have a Merriam-Webster app on my tablet which, after consulting it, I find confirms you are 100% correctly correct. I can submit my entry now without any qualms.

Definition is first word, nu is surplus; after removing this, find a synonym for what is left and change its first letter.

Kirky, the solution, with a different first letter(new character on top) seems to exactly fit what you've got if you remove the 'nu'.

yes the mu is surplus....shed gives the hut bit that you need
