Also puzzled by the part of speech. Wouldn't the clue need 'scarred' rather than 'scar' to mean 'be marked?'

Thanks, StrangelyBrown. Like you, I don't like clues with ancient references, especially if the 'ancient' isn't indicated! I'll see if you like this one, from the current Spectator puzzle.

Diana Dors was originally called Diana Fluck. There's a story of the mayor of her home town (Swindon) making an unfortunate Freudian slip when introducing her at an event that she had returned to. I can't really be more specific here, though!
