It’s late in the day so I’ll spoiler it a bit ... the answer is pertaining to the hip bone, hence hippy with a “y” in the clue. Hippy = of the hip. The play on words is that certain people might find themselves financing a hippie, with an “ie” - and the most hippie person I know does indeed come from quite a wealthy family.

Just joined the Forum today after a few weeks of enjoying the posts.
I found this weeks easier than usual and completed it in record time. Loved the Henry VIII clue and the food theme. 27AC is a cracker too.

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum although I've been doing the Everyman xword for a few months now.

2 questions:

1. What does the acronym FOI mean that is used by many members?

2. I cannot for the life of me fathom the workings for 13a. I have the answer (I'm pretty sure) but no idea how it's derived from the clue. Is it permissible for other members to give hints on here?

Cheers
Steve

Welcome Jim and Steve,

FOI means first one in. You’ll also see LOI for last one in and COD for clue of the day. Also PDM for penny drop moment. I’m sure there are others.

13a is a 6 letter word for bold containing a single letter from the start of langoustine, meaning honey (as in sweetheart)

Thanks for that Jono. I was wondering about that as well.

FOI was 11ac as I do across then down. LOI was 7d only because I forgot to put one of the letters in. COD was 5d run close with 27ac.

Cheers

I liked 13a with its good surface and misdirection.

Hi - some help would be much appreciated

I think I have the answer to 3D but not sure how the second half of the word is derived. Would I be right that the first five letters is from a word meaning fork? I don't get how the final 4 letters are derived. Otherwise I have completed it YABADABADOO

Great forum - don't contribute often but it often provides answers ! Have a a good Christmas and stay safe in these troubled times
