This crossword has generated a lot of interest and I always look forward to Maskarade's themed holiday puzzles. However I don't always find the clueing as tight as it could be. 58 across should helpfully be 'compulsive buyer' or 'loved by retailer' - 'fellow' distracts. Are 23 across and 65 across simply straightforward clues, or am I missing something? Sorry to be a grump!

Last two are bugging me - any hints for 14a and 5d? I think I have the correct answer for 5d (skipper in the early 60s when I was a young lad), but am unable to make sense of the 4 letters which are surrounded by "little bear" and "right".

5d add those four letters to r for a five letter word meaning right.
14a is an operetta with Stravinsky’s first name and Eisler’s initial and a slippery fellow to start

Thank you very much jono - wasn't aware of the operetta. As for 5d I was stuck believing to first 4 letters were a Y short of "little" bear and the "right" was just the letter R. Duh!

For 22 and 12 we have words but neither of them make sense.
22 we have a word associated with Tolkien but no other association. It's someone who enjoys attending big eating occasions minus a first letter plus a fish that begins with an l. What this has to do with a German Baltic trader is a mystery
12 is t.r.s.s which only allows one word, but it has nothing to do with causing misery or cutting girls hair.
Getting these final answers is causing misery!

Hi Ganda,
22a you have this correct. If you look it up in Chambers or elsewhere you’ll see the definition
12d the girl that is cut is Di or rather Di’s and the definition is hair

The defn of 22 is in Chambers and the OED, also Collins online, but not in the ODE
