8d works if you imagine an and, between rising and holding - so grammatically just acceptable depending on intonation ... as usual there's a rhyme but this time an eye-rhyme - a solution beloved of Times setters.

Hello. I’m just getting into the Everyman habit on a Sunday morning and (hopefully) starting to pick up the codes. But .... can someone please explain the ref. to “in the auditorium” in 19D? The clue still seems to lead to the answer without needing this.

19d: It means a homophone here. The first three letters sounds like the French word for in.

Hi Mathi,

I don't think the answer has anything to do with the French language, but just refers to a French artist who's name is pronounced the same as "says Anne" (according to = "says" and Stuart monarch = "Anne") - I could be wrong of course.

I took it as the French artist’s in! May be a lucky coincidence for me or I was over thinking.

Hi, all. Really enjoyed this one (especially after yesterday’s Guardian prize). Finished it without the forum’s help, but always good to read.
I’m with you, Brendan, on parsing 19D - easily my COD. I literally LOL’d.
Liked your joke, Yevrah.
Till next week . .

Lots of good clues this week. Managed without the forum's help but had to look up the first half of 24a (with Chrise on that). Liked 20a having learned that 13 did not necessarily mean 13d from a clue a few months ago. Enjoyed the chat around visionary!

Hi Will4Jan,

I agree, 20a is an excellent clue that's both witty and has a lovely surface.
