Strange one this week; it’s saying something when The Listener is easier than the Spectator.

Enjoyable I guess but I wonder whether The Listener is dumbing down slightly after the EV experiment recently to try to get more people giving it a go.

Interested in what other people think.

We often get easier ones around this time of year, as I recall. But we haven’t had a Playfair this year and it may be too much to hope we’ll get away without one 😉

Thanks, tatters - I had some fun 'researching' the theme. Pity I started my search through Chambers from the front for that one (to me) tricky clue!

May I ask a pedantic point, please?
Having a full grid and the relevant characters, a potential conflict has arisen. The letter where the clued entry for one of the characters meets the periphery could be used as the starting letter for the title of the next character. Alternatively, this letter could simply function as the character’s last letter, in which case it would have to be followed by the first initial of the surname. I favour the first. Asking for a friend.

You lot are too good . The filled grid just looks like a well stocked wordsearch puzzle to me and nothing that seems relevant stands out - apart from the author's first name and that doesn't help.

Appreciative nods acknowledged. Catch you next week hopefully.

Simplesimon, All of the other characters have their full title, so if this one didn't it would seem odd. I'd think the first option.

I looked for a typical suffix, tatters - and then googled some likely sounding results (and they all popped up).

I can't really see an alternative to the title, simplesimon.

Matrom, thanks for that. I agree, the first option.
Now for the Magpies! Stay safe
