Jack is a slang word for nothing. The grid gave us two nothings = jacks.

Thanks, Malone, I had inadvertently looked up the wrong word (adding a superfluous te at the end) and was struggling to see a salad leaf driving across the lawn!

Hi malone.

Don't know about you, but I'm very wary of paying mch attention to puzzle titles in the early stages. Sometimes they only makes sense after everything's solved. (Like this one I think.) Or, much worse, lead one up the garden path in pursuit of wild geese.
