hi yevrah
it means "and literally" - the definition and the wordplay are the same. difficult to achieve, but impressive if done well.

Nice today and thanks, Brendan, for your analysis of the us election.. brilliant! Cod (and loi) for me was 10a. I thought ‘called’ was an anagram of a composer’s name and then I saw it.

Great day for the world anyway.

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's comments. Perhaps I was overly generous in my assessment, but that sort of thing happens when I'm in a good mood 😉

I have been an avid reader of the forum for a number of weeks and have now joined. I always find it difficult to know when to stop agonising over a clue and seek help from here. This week I have managed without assistance, although only just finished after picking it up and putting it down a few times. I agree that 15d is a bit too obvious for a quality cryptic.
my FOI was 1d as I always look for an easy start with a primary. LOI was 14 down.
Enjoyed Brendan's analysis.

The Everyman crossword has been part of my life for the past 40 years. In more recent times I have discovered this forum but, thusfar, only as a reader not a contributor. However clue 15d this week has prompted me to join. This has no place in a quality cryptic crossword. It is so contrived and seems like a clue of last resort.

Morning each, Mr in infrequently here. Should change my name. I don't get to the puzzle until late evening and read your comments with interest. I was switching between this and RT45
(also coming to that late), which kept me on my toes. Found this one easier but in spite of the hints still can't see 12a. So a further hint...? BTW re the comments on the answer to 6d & exclusion in 2d, they're both in Chambers so not typos. Stay safe folks

Hi dandybandy
What the first and last letters of the two named places?

btw "exclusion" is in Chambers, of course, but "exclusing" isn't in mine!

Hi Chrise,
Thanks for that but between looking at the thread and my post the memory didn't fire on all cylinders. Actually 12ac was an early one in. What was/is giving me headache is 14ac.
You're right also about exclusing. It isn't in mine either. I saw exclusion and extrapolated backwards so to speak.
