Teeweens those letters are correct. The definition is spike (a wintery one). 2nd letter from Milligan, plus a group (maybe like a reading group?) minus R.

Thanks Mattrom, sorted now! Never knew the unit of mass as a cricketing term.

How do I find the name of this subatomic particle? I've googled it and assume X means its a boson, but got no further. It is now my last one.

It's a fermion, not a boson roof.

Many thanks abicoop. Got it now. Was fun reacquainting with SM if distracting. Very pleased to have finished with much help from the forum. On to Everyman.

I forgot to say I have now finished, thanks to the Forum. Some of the clues (and answers) were really difficult. Filling in the grid was fairly easy.

Haven't done a Paul for a while and decided to have a go when I saw the activity on here. (Did the Guardian cryptic daily for umpteen years).
Rather tricky! Got there after a kick-start on here and help along the way.
Q? The P answer - where does the 4th letter come from in the clue? I can see 'rejected class almost' but not why, say, 'almost perfect' creates the 4th letter.
Thanks.

I interpreted it as "perfect" being a verb, also synonymous with sharpen, 4 letters long then the last removed to give the second half of the tropical native.
