Managed to complete most of this by Saturday tea time - assisted by the fact that my beloved Wales played so badly that they scarcely offered a distraction. I am however confused by 22 across. Presumably the letter needed is s? In which case is it sire? If so I can't make any senses of the parsing. On 18 down presume the function is mathematical but is there a single letter abbreviation for Norway?

Any help welcome ( this is a may contain answers). Thanks to all

williamseal, you don't require an "S" at 22 across - the misprint is at the second word. Definition is first five words.

The entry at 18 down is influenced by the unclued 26 across which, as the preamble says, is initially blank. The function IS mathematical and the abbreviation IS for Norway.

Will, I think the misprinted word is the second one and the letter is N. I presume you have the answer and can find the appropriate definition in Chambers.

Thanks Rad and Kenhiggs

Appreciate your help but still remain thoroughly confused by 22 across. Is the misprinted letter an N in the second word? If so I still cannot get to the bird. I am sorry if I am being dense.

Williamseal, misprint is N and the bird is in Bradford's - its middle two letters are to be reversed. Begins with "C".

Thank you kenhiggs

I'd made a mistake - ending 5 down with an 'e'. Not the easiest of clues!

Everything sussed except the parsing of "Sasine" (35 across). Any hints please?

Misprint in first word

Unusual use of 'Himself" as in 'he was himself' meaning 'of sound mind'

That's the way I figured it too. Not a very good clue.
