Thaks malone - I assumed it was that, but the 'retired' has me baffled. I've just checked Chambers again and see how that comes in.

Is something meant to be going on with the down clues?

An E missing from the word play for 31, 35, 43?

Thanks, Nelson. I forgot to mention the 'retired' bit, your post didn't give the clue, but I knew I'd seen it mentioned in Chambers.

I didn't notice any missing Es, I'll have another look.

The unindicated letters will be missing from both an across and a down clue that intersect at one of these letters. Don't think it's an E missing at 31, but agree with the other two.

Nelson, have you overlooked the 'one letter per grid row..' part?

Thanks malone, but no I don't thinks so.

Loge, not quite sure what you mean - let me have a think.

Nelson, thanks. Two of the clues you mentioned - 35 and 43 definitely have Es that are not indicated by wordplay.

Sorry for confusion - what I meant was that let's say for example that an across clue for CROSSWORD intersects at the W with a down clue for POWER. If the W is an unindicated letter to be copied across, the wordplay for these words will indicated CROSSORD and POER.

loge, I think Ive added to the confusion. The letter that seems to be unindicated in 31 is S.
Also, the L in 48D seems to be unindicated.
As you said, this could be because they are the letters not indicated in the across clues.
JUst wonder why the preamble didn't mention the down clues would be affected.

I think that “one letter per grid row” allows for the unindicated letters to affect both across and down clues, as Malone hinted at above. I agree though that perhaps the preamble wording could have made this clearer.

Not sure what to make of that.

Although so much thematic material is to be applauded, it is quite easy to spot, which makes the crossword itself relatively easy as you can slot in quite a few of the words from the theme alone.
