The fifth 2 letter item goes into the second normal down answer. But remember one of these downs doesn’t have an insertion, and it isn’t the seventh.

Yes, I see where you're coming from, loge - I numbered the downs in isolation (not as they were originally clued) from left to right!

Lordbadger, as you’ll see from the last couple of posts, my idea of which is the seventh normal down entry may be different from yours... sorry for any confusion:)

...of course, it might just be me (and, if so - sorry, lordbadger).

The plot thickens! Thanks for the helpful hints but I’m now more puzzled. I had indeed counted from left to right and so confused matters by identifying 22d as the 7th normal down clue (rather than 6th). But I’ve gone awry somewhere because I’ve inserted the 2nd item in the 8th normal down clue (8th both conventionally and as per left to right numbering!). That longer word “sounded” right, if you see what I mean. I’d better look again!

Are you sure you mean 22 down? That is not a normal clue. 23 down is, however.
