Thanks for this. Now I see that I have mis-identified several of the redundant words, which makes it quite challenging to solve the resulting clues! So I am now working backwards from the answers to the wordplay.

All completed. Thank you Ifor. Tricky endgame. Just reminds us why we hated chemists at university.
Still stuck on your latest Magpie. Full grid, just the endgame.

Hi everyone, just had a great week in Cornwall and had to give it up for a 355 mile trek back to tier 3 Lancashire - not good!

Anyhow, once again I am struggling for a PDM, could someone please confirm that the 7 words from the thematic set are of the following lengths ( a ? means I haven't yet got it) 3,?,8,6,?,6.?

Have completed the puzzle but just want to tie up a couple of loose ends: the wordplay for the first of the thematic items and ditto for the sixth. What is the Scottish word for fearful? I know what the two words represent. Many thanks

Diver, it's a word which is slang for "excellent" and also a three-letter abbreviation for part of your central hearing system.

I think the "right wing" refers to the position of the thematic items in the modern version of the whole set, and the "majority" is a play on the number of the group also being a significant age in one's life. But there may be a better interpretation than that.

I fear I may have made a slip .. having inserted 6 2-letter items to derive new words/phrase, I’m left with the 2nd and 7th of the answers to the normal down clues, and I’m left with the 5th 2-letter item .. can anybody help please, as I see no possibilities?
