...the Scots dialect hint at least makes what I have look and sound plausible

I must have worn out 5 volumes by now, sircrispin - but they're getting flimsier (my earliest copy is the only one still in its binding and two have had to be binned).
I'm sure you've got the right word - but I needed Chambers for two of the other entries.

The penultimate word "I" in the first clue is redundant isn't it, if the belief is a 5-letter palindrome? The only way it can possibly contribute is if it refers to the setter himself, but that seems a bit of a stretch.

Re 1, that's what I thought too Loge, must be a self-reference. Just about getting away with it, I think.
A really good work-out, thanks Kite!

It's unusual not to see Prospero heading up this forum. I hope all is well on the island...

many thanks for your concern, sir c. - all well, thank you. Am in France so it doesn't get published till 1 am and have guests, so been slow starting. And actually don't like to hog the start - letting others get the notification of posts ... Am struggling with NW corner - and the famous L?E?R? ... also unsure if 31 is an enzyme?

The 'I' is not in the clue on the first entry web page, so maybe it's a typo?

I have a feeling you should know better than anyone, Robi :)

It’s amazing that despite the Genius only appearing monthly, the Guardian manages to make a mess of almost every puzzle!
