It might be worth mentioning that the 4 representations of the phrase should involve plurals to be entirely accurate.

I actually discovered the way of removing letters very quickly and it was not until I had nearly a completed grid fill before I spotted the theme. Then the endgame was relatively straightforward although my drawing is not great.

I think one of the cleverest things about this puzzle was finding enough suitable examples of the words to remove. A most enjoyable puzzle.

Sorry gitto - the thematic phrase features the plural of the singular examples (8 in all, including those in the grid) you've no doubt discovered - and it's the general term for them.

OK drxx, I don't really see if it matters whether you use 8,8 or 8,10 for the thematic phrase. The line drawing is still baffling me as I do not quite understand what Shark means by "letters that match the other side" - does this simply mean letters common to each side, or do they have to do so positionally as well?

If I knew how to count, that would be 9,8 or 9, 10!!!!!

It means letters that are identical and symmetrically placed relative to the centre.

I interpreted the phrase as four words: X in the Y or X in one's Y

Hi again Loge, I had just figured that out as I have the oval around the syllable, the two filled matching letters and the lines associated with them. i know what the curves look like and what they represent, I just need to find them!! (but I will - eventually)

Yes, me too, loge (it was your, 'the phrase still eludes me' that prompted my response, gitto - I still think the endgame works well but it isn't entirely accurate and I didn't want to mislead).
