Thanks Brendan and Malone, got it. I had the wrong first letter for 4d which was just clumsy because it was the letter that was needed for the statement. Doh! Probably wouldn't have got it without help though. There are two possible spellings - the penultimate letter can vary according to Crossword Solver. (Doesn't really matter though).
Now for the downs.....

I think I've got all the down unclued except the first 4/5 letter one in column 13. Can I just check that 12a ends with an N and 14a with a G - only I can't seem to find a word that matches the theme.

Yes, Brendan, your letters are correct. It's a new word for me, but the British versions have probably been getting a fair bit of use recently...
