Thanks Quisling. I'm afraid the Alabama reference still has me foxed. I can parse from the last 4 words, make a connection with soldier but Alabama? I suspect this is going to end with a DOH! of epic proportions!

Hi Granama,

I'm wondering about that too. The best I can come up with is the 3 letter thematic representation of the "soldier" is a US term, so Alabama...?

So, granama1, the parsing of the grid entry is the last four words, the first three words give the first syllable of the thematic definition (including a silent letter), and the next three words give the second syllable. It needn't be Alabama specifically, it's just used to indicate the US usage

Quisling, thanks. I think I was getting tangled up in the surface. Mainly because Buffalo Soldiers were part of the United States Army and formed in Kansas. ie not Confederates.

I’m with granama! Still baffled by 22. I get from the above what the ‘buffalo’ with silent letter must be, but....
Also generally I’m really struggling with bottom left quadrant so would love a tip for 35a. Possibly involving snowier anagram?
