I've filled the grid, and I have a line that would do the job, but it doesn't end in the right place, and I can't see how it could.

I was having the same problem biggus56. But then I realised that the fourth line doesn’t need to join another line... you can finish it at the specified end point. It doesn’t look as pleasing as if you keep going to NW but it does the job. Hope this helps

biggus56 - I think the first part of the message (2 words) locates the start point in a particular corner, if you then go to the opposite corner and turn horizontally (and overshoot the next corner) everything should pan out ok.

I'm still at the early stages of solving but am a bit confused (there's a shock!) by the preamble...

For 7d I can see a 4 letter "body part" hidden in the clue, but the numeration is 4 letters and there are 4 cells, so it would seem to be entered normally, but the preamble says such clues have an extra letter that isn't entered - what am I missing?

Bendan - even some of the words that fit the spaces have to extend beyond the grid, leaving blank cells. Only the clues with wordplay generating an extra letter are completely within the grid, with no blanks.

Ahh I see what you mean, many thanks Nelson, I'll carry on but may well be back.

Another thing. To be geographically accurate, shouldn't the message have a fourth word?

That’s what I thought initially Nelson. But then I realised you could just pull up short.

Yes, I suppose it depends on the path you follow. But I still think it needs the extra word in defining the location. The preamble doesn't give any instruction re the starting point does it?

The preamble states “the lines two end-points”. Presumably because you could start at either end.
