Nelson, thanks - my second post was hastily added, when I realised I'd been so busy dealing with the latter half of the clue. I enjoyed reading yours, I hadn't really considered the contradictory aspect of the word, answer!

I was once freelancing for a US company and told them I had some ideas for a new project that I'd like to table.

They were a little bit baffled, and asked if they could have a look at them first. Fortunately, I read that as an invitation to table (English meaning) the said ideas, and did so.

It was only in later discussions that we both realised the verb has completely opposite meanings depending which side of the Atlantic you're on.

Unless I am on completely the wrong track, there seems to be an error in the extra letter in 25 Down.

25d works fine, if you drop the required letter from “heist” and make an anagram of the two-letter abbreviation of the last word and the previous two words
