Thanks for that. One of the things in this book that surprised me the most was reading that the mass of a hydrogen atom is smaller than the sum of it's component parts.

I'm surprised that's the case for hydrogen. Nuclei with more than one particle have "binding energy", which seems to weigh something.

You've got it exactly Chris, it's "binding energy" - it's even in inverted commas, just as you wrote it:-)

I was doing splendidly even without Googling 1ac. I've done three quarters but am stuck on the bottom right hand corner. I haven't got any crossers for 22d, so cannot get 14d. I have the second word for 28ac. Can I have a hint for 23ac and 15ac. Is the latter a French name?

I have to go out now to the emergency vets as our cat has a poorly paw. I'll be back soon, no doubt with more questions.

23a The usual single representation of "50" + a ten letter word for "copies" - definitions is "checks".

15a is a Greek God representing "youth" and is hidden in 11,25

The more I think if it, I really appreciate the intertwining of clues as represented by 15 into 11/25 and 14 into 22
