Think what a number in brackets means when it's part of a clue. Then you need to get your wordfinder out and find something which satisfies that and also last two words of the instruction. Then it's time to start looking at the grid cell by cell.

Or google 'longest words...' and look out for the number.

Hi all
Just completed the grid and trying to get the instruction. Are the letters for it in clue order or jumbled up? I can't get anything sensible from letters in clue order.

They're in clue order, and you have to choose just one of the alternatives (except where there's only one letter, e.g. 29 across). It's easy to go wrong when you have to move several letters away (or at least it was for me!).

yes in clue order ...pick one of the 2 each time where there are 2, otherwise it's the 1 letter...the instruction is 5,11,5,4,6,6 i think....

...so you actually get rid of 29 letters leaving real words/phrases?

I think so - but 'shade' is a bit loose (in my shaded cells the letters are just about legible).

Thanks for the help so far. I now have a rogue letter at 25 and am not sure what to do with 18 and 22, as they have to be real words ?

Tony, if you've now worked out the instruction you'll find that 18 and 22 become real words (22 becomes a proper noun not in Chambers).

Not sure what you mean by a rogue letter?
