Lumen, the name is very well-known (though I think of 'writer' rather than 'poet'). The four words aren't all the same length, but 2 x one length, 2 x another and they're physically linked in the grid. They're all quite palatable....
Thanks, loge! I did think of the cricketing term as a possibility for the first half of the clue, but it never led to anything. But you've cleared that up nicely for me. Hopefully this answer will be the key to me twigging the others.
Thanks, Lumen! I did wonder if it was just an anagram indicator, but having only discovered what cycling meant a couple of weeks ago, I wondered it was something like that.
Thanks Malone, all done now. Except parsing for 12 (entered at 9)? And not sure if we need to anagram the five unclouded words into a statement as suggested earlier or not.... if not, it seems a bit unsatisfactory.
Although as Foinaven says the items are protected from many threats it seems a submerged valley has intruded!
Many thanks to all contributors....the only way I am usually able to complete.
Can someone please help me parse 10d, which is my only loose end? Mild (or mild condition?) is the definition, old man is the first two letters, c is cold, but not sure how the rest quite fits.
