A touch late in the day but the parsing of these clues has been bugging me for days and could someone please help?

23D 'Rudolf, the German behind something energising locomotives to begin with.' Diesel. I'm assuming this is an attempt at an &lit clue and parses thus: Die ('the German') plus initial letters of something energising locomotives'. But where does 'Rudolf' come in?

2D 'May perhaps leader deposed by party taken in by exotic creature! Exactly.' On the dot, seems to be the answer but haven't a clue why.

I did this puzzle but dont really remember it. Anyway.

Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine

Take top off (m)onth, party = do inside our usual alien friend ET.

(m)ONTH is May perhaps leader deposed
DO is party, inside
ET is exotic creature (extra-terrestrial)

no probs chris. Just lounging around looking for something to watch on TV. Might need to resort to Netflix.
