The point that clarkgwent is making is that changing all 3 Hs gives a word that fits the definition rather better (though I think the grid entry is close enough).

Ah OK Thanks "Chrise @ 32" I hadn't realised that ending the word with a D gives a gizmo. Both versions ending with a D or H are OK but I got 30a first so didn't give it a second thought.

Only just got back to this after giving up last night (I am on Washington DC time) and I am still stuck on the bottom right hand corner.
Is it Turkey or turkey...I cannot find a place in Turkey?
And Tennis shots--lobs, aces get me nowhere.
And the clue with all the numbers has me mystified.

31a It's a shot where you hit it before it bounces - V(ery) = 6 letter word for "weak-spirited" (think 'cowardly') reversed and minus it's last letter (coming up short)

Thank you very much, Brendan. We are at about 550 deaths here in Washington DC (our population about 600,000) and we have a lot of deaths in the Maryland suburbs. We go out masked and socially isolate although we are in a sort of phase one of reopening. I had my hair cut, for example.
