The plot thickens re the list. Britannica gives 17 but others only 15. Kirky, 34 across - an American state round a two letter abbreviation for Chinese, 9 across - Your fifth letter is wrong.

That's what I have Kirky. On a different note I feel that all EVers should make strong representation to the Telegraph to get them to change their minds about discontinuing the EV.

Plans are to replace it with a Sunday Toughie. Apparently the EV attracts 1/10 the submissions of other puzzles & therefore is viewed as having little interest to solvers.

I wonder where wiki and brit get their 17 from. Any pictorial representation is 15 only. But if it genuinely is 17 (ie Kruger is using wiki rather than - I am an old man - his/her O-level) then where is the A/B clash?

I should have looked at wiki before posting. Forget what I said about A/B.

Buddy Kirky

Thanks, how awful. In that case I will be cancelling the Sunday Telegraph which I only get for the EV.

Their excuse is nonsense. It is harder than others so will obviously attract fewer entries. Also many solvers dont submit. In my case because I dont want the prize. I have saved hundreds of pounds in stamps by not submitting as others have I am sure.

I will do what alwayspuzzled says.

The EV and the Inquisitor are generally I think considered to be at a similar level, with largely the same setters, and it's rare that they don't feature at least one or two potential talking points. The last 50 IQ blogs on fifteensquared attracted a total of 730 comments, equating to an average of over 14; the last 50 EV blogs received a total of 142 comments, an average of less than 3. The most comments received by an EV was 9; the least received by an IQ was...9.

I'm not sure what can explain this differential except a great disparity in solver interest levels between the two series. I'm sad to see the EV go, but not surprised.
