Nice and straightforward (thank goodness after the Listener) and finding 7 of the 17 letters to highlight was simple. But the other 10? Does that mean that there is a "right" answer to the resolution of the clashes, or is it the solver's choice?

There is a right answer, cockie - and there's only one possiblility remaining after the highlighting stage.

I'm not sure the 7 letter entry is one of those to be highlighted.

I have the 7 letter one as the def - the other 10 letters appear to finish the job.

Are the other ten at 11d and 31d? - clutching at straws I know!

Some tricky end-games recently - that's putting it mildly.!

I think I can see some justification for one of those, kenhiggs but I've gone for two different answers - both synonyms that can be justified in Chambers (including a linking word).
However, as son1ofrover1 has something else in mind, perhaps I'm missing something better.

drxx does your first post imply that your highlighted words initially contained a clashing cell?

20a, 19d and 11d struck me as a possibility for the clue referred to in the preamble for selecting one of the 14as from the 9 letter clashes.

Yes, buddy - the cryptic part of my highlighting is two answers (10 letters, 3 words). It includes one of the answers given by son1ofrover.

Reading between the lines I have come to the same conclusions as drxx as to what needs highlighting. That also determines the resolution of the clashes. Years ago I was lucky to see one of the theme from above while I was up on the local moor. Its back glistening in the sun is a sight I will never forget.
