Going back to 9a, the answer is the "bark" or ship in which the ....nauts sailed in to retrieve the fleece (not really a bark).

Hi Barretter,

I've looked at pictures and you're right, they don't really appear to be the same thing but Wiki says that..."In poetic use, a bark can be any sailing ship or boat", so that's probably fair enough - unless I've completely misunderstood it..again!

Ah, what I meant was that Mathi in post 5 seemed to imply that the fleece was the "bark" whereas the answer to the clue is the "retriever" not what was "retrieved".

"Bark" is an Anglicised version of "barque", which is definitely a ship. though it's not clear how many masts the one in question had!

Well I started late today having made strawberry jam, and have got stuck fairly early on, though I did understand 9ac. We read it at school.

After reading this thread I am completely bemused. I have no idea what 8d is and have no answers in top right hand side and little in bottom left. Please can someone explain the numbers and give me a hint for 10ac. Is the answer to 24ac trees?

I'll battle on.

Thanks

Hi Roof,

10a a 4 letter drink inside a word meaning (broken) "pieces of pottery" (spelled with an E rather than the usual A - definition is "those who bring home the bacon"

24a Yes, "knave" (think a playing card) cut/minus it's last letter + A + "golf club" (the organisation rather than what one might swing) a very famous one.

Strawberry jam sounds delish:-)

Hi Brendan

Thanks for your hints. I've now found the golf club for 24ac, the unkown word for 21 ac and got 26ac. So I have the second part of 8d.

I'd like to get 5d so I can understand the earlier reference to 5 and 18 d. I have 18d, but still a gaping hole in the top right. I can't for the life of me think who brings home the bacon. I shall be very embarassed when light dawns. I'll keep going.
